Terms of Service
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the Lawber mobile app, the website lawber.app and related services (together, “Lawber”). Lawber is operated by StopScam LLC, 254 Chapman Road, Ste 208, Newark, DE 19702, US (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at [email protected].
By creating an account, accepting these Terms in the app or placing a request, you agree to these Terms. If you are an attorney, the Attorney Terms also apply to you. The Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information, including in the AI features described in section 11.
In short, for clients: you choose when and where you need an attorney and see the full price before you confirm. The price is reserved (authorized) on your card before your request is shown to attorneys. An attorney accepting your request does not charge your card; you are normally charged after the attorney completes the service. Canceling is free before an attorney accepts; after that, a cancellation fee can apply as described in section 8. If something goes wrong, report a problem in the request or open a dispute within 24 hours after the charge, and a person at Lawber Support reviews it.
1. What Lawber is — and what it is not
- Lawber is a technology platform. It helps people find an independent licensed attorney who can come to a court, a police station or another place at a chosen time, and it handles scheduling, messaging, calls and payment for that visit.
- Lawber is not a law firm, does not provide legal services and does not give legal advice. Legal services are provided by the attorney who accepts your request. The attorney is responsible for their professional work and judgment. Lawber staff and our AI features do not act as your lawyer.
- Any attorney–client relationship is formed directly between you and the attorney; Lawber is not a party to it. The attorney may ask you to agree on the scope of their representation separately; these Terms do not replace that agreement.
- Using Lawber, writing to Lawber Support or using an AI feature does not by itself create an attorney–client relationship with anyone, and such communications may not be protected by attorney–client privilege.
- We do not guarantee that an attorney will accept your request, that a particular attorney will be available, or any outcome of your matter or court case. Lawber does not recommend or endorse a particular attorney.
- Lawber operates only in the United States, and only in the states and for the types of matters shown in the app. Availability differs between states.
2. Accounts and sign-in
- You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter into a binding agreement to use Lawber.
- You sign in with a phone number or email address and a one-time code that we send by text message or email, or with Google or Apple where the app offers it. One phone number or email address can belong to one account and one role (client or attorney).
- Keep access to your phone and email secure. You are responsible for activity in your account. If you turn on fingerprint or face unlock, the check happens on your device. Tell us through Support if you believe someone else has accessed your account.
- Give accurate information about yourself and your requests. If you place a request for another person, you confirm that you are allowed to do so and to share their information with the attorney.
- Personal identity for new attorney applications is verified only through Stripe Identity's hosted government-ID and selfie check. If the identity check is temporarily unavailable, you can try again later in the app. Identity verification does not establish a current state-bar license, guarantee Lawber approval or replace Stripe Connect payout setup. See the Attorney Terms and Privacy Policy for the verification and data-handling details.
- Review Stripe's Privacy Policy and its verification disclosures and choices. Accepting these Lawber Terms does not replace any biometric-processing or training consent Stripe presents.
- You can delete your account in the app (Settings → Delete account) or at lawber.app/delete-account. If you have an open request, an unsettled payment or payout, or an open dispute about a request, the account is closed for new requests first and deleted once they are settled. An ordinary support question does not delay deletion. See the Privacy Policy for what we keep.
3. Placing a request
- You can ask for an attorney urgently (“Urgent now”) or for a scheduled date and time. Dates and times are always those of the place of the service, in its local time zone.
- You describe the matter, the place, the languages you need and, if you wish, attach files. Attorneys who can take your request see its details once it is published; the attorney who accepts it can see everything you shared for the request.
- You say whether you plan to be present. If the attorney needs you to be present, you are asked to confirm this before the attorney is assigned. Only then does your absence count as “client didn’t show” (see section 7).
- If the AI brief is on for your account, an AI summary of your description is prepared for the attorney (see section 11). With the AI brief off, you write the description yourself.
- A scheduled request more than 72 hours away is saved as a private planned request. It is not shown to attorneys until the card hold succeeds, about 72 hours before the start (see section 5).
- You can save a request as a draft and publish it later. A draft that you don’t edit for 30 days is deleted; we remind you 3 days before. A request cannot be published for a time that has already passed.
4. Price
Before you place a request, the app shows the full price and its parts. All prices are in US dollars.
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Call-out | The attorney’s fee for coming to the place and providing the service, set for each state. It covers preparation, travel and up to 60 minutes at the place, including waiting. |
| Urgent surcharge | Added to urgent requests only. |
| Evening or night rate | When time-of-day rates are in effect, the call-out (including any urgent surcharge) is multiplied for a service in the evening or at night, by local time at the place of the service. The rates are ×2 from 9:00 PM to midnight and ×3 from midnight to 7:00 AM. The app shows the rate when you choose the time and shows the added amount in the price. |
| Pre-consultation | Optional. A separate consultation with the attorney before the visit, priced by its length. It has no urgent surcharge. |
| Service fee | Lawber’s fee for the platform, set for the state and type of the request (urgent or scheduled). Lawber does not take any part of the attorney’s fee. |
- The total shown when you place the request is the maximum you can be charged for it. It can only become higher if you choose to add a Boost — an extra amount for the attorney that you can offer while the request is looking for an attorney. Each Boost adds at least $50, and the total Boost for a request is currently limited to $500. Boost is not multiplied by evening or night rates and does not change the service fee. You see the new total before confirming a Boost, and the card hold is increased by that amount.
- A price quote is valid for a few minutes. If it expires before you confirm, the app shows a new price for you to confirm.
- The price is fixed when you place the request. Later changes to Lawber’s prices do not change it.
- A change to the date, time, place or scope of a request that would change the price requires your new confirmation.
- Lawber does not currently charge sales tax. If tax ever becomes due on a request, it will be shown in the price before you confirm.
- The app does not ask for tips.
5. Payment: authorization and charge
Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card details are entered into Stripe and are not stored by Lawber. Your receipt identifies Lawber and its operator, StopScam LLC.
Authorization (hold)
- When you place a request, you allow Lawber to reserve (authorize) the total on your saved card later without asking you again, and to charge it as described in these Terms. This permission covers this request only.
- For an urgent request, or a scheduled request less than 72 hours away, the hold is requested right away. For a scheduled request more than 72 hours away, the hold is requested about 72 hours before the start; if it fails, we try again about 60, 48 and 24 hours before the start. Every request is shown to attorneys only after the hold succeeds.
- If your bank declines the hold or asks you to confirm it (for example, 3-D Secure), the app asks you to confirm or choose another card. If the hold still can’t be placed by the deadline shown in the app, the request is not placed or is canceled, at no charge.
When you are charged
- The attorney marks “Arrived” when they are at the place and “Completed” when the service is over. Normally, the charge follows the authorized service-completion process. Accepting a request alone does not charge your card. A visit that did not happen is not charged (see section 7).
- If the attorney reports finishing before the scheduled start, you are asked to confirm it in the app before any charge. If you don’t confirm or you disagree, Lawber Support decides.
- If the attorney arrived and then the hearing was postponed or canceled, or you did not come when your presence was agreed as required, the full price is charged: the attorney came and did their part.
- If you ordered a pre-consultation and it did not take place, its price is not charged. The rest of the hold is released by your bank.
- Under the consultation-only court-postponement process described in section 8, a pre-consultation that was actually provided and confirmed may be settled without an arrival mark; no visit charge is made, and the unused part of the hold is released.
- Backup charge. If the attorney has confirmed billable arrival and completion remains unresolved, the authorized amount may be charged six hours before the actual confirmed bank capture deadline, excluding known unprovided components. This is a backup charge pending review, not a finding that all services were delivered. Acceptance alone and elapsed time do not establish service completion. A false arrival confirmed by Support is excluded. The attorney is not paid from the backup charge until Lawber Support has reviewed the request and the other payout conditions are met. You can dispute it within 24 hours after the charge as described in section 9; Support can refund you fully or partly.
- You are never charged more than the maximum shown when you placed the request plus any Boost you confirmed.
6. Urgent and scheduled requests
Urgent requests
- An urgent request is shown to available attorneys once the hold is in place. The search lasts 15 minutes. Before it ends, you can choose “Keep searching” to extend it by 15 minutes, up to two times (45 minutes in total), but not past the latest arrival time you set or the time the hold allows. We send you a reminder about 5 minutes before the search ends.
- You can set the latest time the attorney must arrive by. After an attorney accepts, they must arrive within 60 minutes of the first acceptance, or by your latest arrival time if that is earlier. The app shows the deadline.
- If no attorney accepts in time, the request closes, nothing is charged and the hold is released. You can start a new search.
Scheduled requests
- A scheduled request stays open to attorneys until the scheduled start. If no attorney accepts by then, the request closes, nothing is charged and the hold is released.
7. The service day
- Before the service day, you see the attorney’s photo, state of license, languages and number of completed Lawber requests. Their name becomes visible on the service day (for an urgent request — right away). An attorney approved by Lawber is shown with a “Verified” badge.
- Messages and calls in the app open when an urgent request is accepted, and for a scheduled request at 12:00 AM on the service day, by local time at the place of the service. You can message and make audio or video calls in the app. Calls are not recorded. When the request is completed or canceled, the conversation becomes read-only and its history stays available; after that, use “Report a problem” or Support.
- On the service day, either of you can choose to share your live location with the other for 15 minutes or one hour, and can stop at any time. Sharing is voluntary and ends automatically.
- The attorney marks “Arrived” in the arrival window shown in the app: from 60 minutes before a scheduled start until 30 minutes after it, or, for an urgent request, by the deadline described in section 6.
- If the attorney does not mark arrival by the deadline, the request is canceled because the attorney did not come: nothing is charged, the hold is released and a coupon used on the request is returned. If the attorney reports that they provided the service but could not record arrival, or if Support has already agreed a payment for an earlier attorney’s part of the service, Support reviews the request before the hold expires instead.
- The price includes up to 60 minutes at the place, including waiting. Lawber does not add charges for longer service.
- When the service is over, the attorney marks “Completed” and says what happened (service provided, hearing postponed or canceled, or client didn’t show) and what they did. You see this in the request.
- After the attorney completes the request, you are asked to confirm the service or report a problem within 24 hours after the charge. If you do neither in that time, the service counts as accepted. Confirming does not take away your right to dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer.
- The attorney can mark “client didn’t show” only if your presence was agreed as required, after waiting at least 30 minutes from the later of the agreed meeting time and their arrival, and after trying to contact you in the app.
- After a completed request, you can rate the service and leave a comment. Ratings are visible only to Lawber staff.
8. Cancellations and changes
If you cancel
- Before any attorney has accepted your request, you can cancel it in the app. Nothing is charged, the hold is released and a coupon used on it is returned. You can also cancel or delete a private planned request or a draft at any time.
- If the attorney who accepted withdraws and we are looking for a replacement, you can cancel free of charge until a new attorney accepts.
- After an attorney has accepted and before they arrive, you can still cancel in the app, and a cancellation fee may apply:
The call-out here includes any urgent surcharge and evening or night rate, but not Boost or a pre-consultation. The fee is charged from your hold and the rest of the hold is released. The 50% share is paid to the attorney. A coupon used on the request is returned. The app shows the exact amounts before you confirm.Request Cancellation fee Scheduled, canceled 24 hours or more before the start None. The whole hold is released. Scheduled, canceled less than 24 hours before the start Lawber’s service fee plus 50% of the attorney’s call-out Urgent, at any time after acceptance Lawber’s service fee plus 50% of the attorney’s call-out - After the attorney has marked arrival, while Support is reviewing the request, or once it has been charged or is in dispute, the request can’t be canceled in the app. If something is wrong, report a problem (section 9).
If the court postpones the hearing before the attorney arrives
- Before any attorney has accepted, you can report the postponement in the request (“The court postponed the hearing”). The request closes without charge, the hold is released and a draft with the same details is created for the new date. You confirm the new date and price when you publish it.
- After an attorney has accepted, contact Support through the request. The authorization stays in place until Support resolves the postponement after checking with both sides. When Support confirms the postponement, the request is closed without a cancellation fee.
- A pre-consultation that was actually provided and the applicable Lawber service fee may be settled only after Support confirms it. The visit and any unprovided consultation are not charged, and the unused part of the hold is released. A coupon does not remove the service fee.
If the attorney can’t come
- An attorney can withdraw from a request before arriving. We then look for another attorney; you see that a new attorney is being found, and nothing is charged. If no one accepts by the start of a scheduled request, or within 60 minutes of the first acceptance of an urgent request, the request closes and the hold is released.
- If an attorney who has arrived reports that they can’t continue, Lawber Support reviews the situation and may arrange another attorney. You are not charged more than the maximum of your request because of a replacement.
Cancellation by Lawber
- Lawber Support may cancel an accepted request, for example because the hearing was postponed, the attorney can’t attend or for safety reasons. In these cases nothing is charged and the hold is released. If Support cancels the request at your request, the cancellation fee above applies.
9. Problems, disputes and refunds
- Before the charge you can report a problem in the request: the attorney didn’t come, marked arrival but wasn’t there, or didn’t provide the service. Reporting a problem does not charge you by itself. If the attorney marked “Arrived” and the review is still open when the hold is about to expire, the backup charge described in section 5 may still happen; Support then decides whether to refund you fully or partly. An arrival that Support finds false is not charged. Support can also release the hold or return the request to work.
- After the charge you or the attorney can open a dispute in the request within 24 hours. One dispute can be opened per request. The attorney’s payout is paused while it is reviewed.
- While a problem report or dispute is open, both sides can add information to it in the app. Support may ask you for more details. Support decides on the evidence in the request, including the recorded arrival, completion and what the attorney reported. When arrival and completion were recorded, a refund requires evidence that the service was not provided as agreed.
- Opening a report or dispute does not give staff access to confidential request conversations. You can separately allow a named reviewer to access a selected conversation snapshot and selected attachments for an open dispute, and can withdraw that permission. Closing the dispute also stops further access. You can submit a report without allowing conversation access.
- Support may decide on a full refund, a partial refund, or payment to the attorney. Refunds go back to the card that was charged; the time until they show on your statement depends on your bank.
- The attorney-service amount and Lawber’s service fee are reviewed separately. Refunding the attorney-service amount does not by itself refund the service fee; a service-fee refund or full refund may be separately authorized by Support.
- A refund can’t be more than the amount charged to your card. The coupon part of a price is not paid out in money.
- Please use “Report a problem” or a dispute in the app before contacting your bank. If you dispute a charge with your bank or card issuer, we send Stripe facts from the service record of the request as evidence: a description of the service, its timeline, the attorney’s location points at arrival and completion, your confirmation or that the 24-hour window passed, the number and times of messages and the number and length of calls (never their content), your acceptance of these Terms (version, time and IP address), these cancellation and refund terms, your name and email and the payment receipt.
- The 24-hour window is how Lawber’s own dispute process works. It does not limit any rights you have with your bank or card issuer, or under law.
10. Coupons and referrals
- Coupons are issued by Lawber, have no cash value and can’t be exchanged for money. The conditions and expiry date of a coupon are shown in the app.
- A coupon reduces the attorney’s call-out only — not evening or night rates, the urgent surcharge, a pre-consultation or Boost — up to the maximum discount of that coupon. Some coupons reduce part of Lawber’s service fee instead. The discount is paid by Lawber and does not reduce what the attorney receives. A coupon does not remove the service fee: even a 100% coupon leaves Lawber’s service fee payable.
- If a request with a coupon is canceled or expires without a charge, the coupon is returned.
- If only part of a coupon is used (for example, when only a consultation is charged), the rest may be returned as a new coupon.
- Referral rewards, when offered, are given after the first completed request of the invited person. An invite code works only before your own first completed request.
11. AI features
Some Lawber features use an AI model from OpenAI, accessed through its API. The Privacy Policy describes exactly what each feature sends.
- AI brief. By accepting these Terms and the Privacy Policy, you permit your request description, answers and selected files to be sent to OpenAI to prepare a summary for the attorney. The AI summary may contain mistakes; the attorney relies on your information, not on the AI.
- Support assistant. By accepting these Terms and the Privacy Policy, you permit messages you write to the support assistant to be sent to OpenAI for an initial answer. Lawber’s AI administrator may also use them to prioritize your request and to prepare a reply based on Lawber’s help topics. A person takes over when needed, and you can ask for a person at any time.
- AI guide. With Guide permission enabled, the AI guide sends only the question you type and the Lawber guide topics for your role and language to OpenAI to answer questions about using the app. Your documents, payments, cases and account details are not sent for the guide. Do not type card numbers, bank details, ID numbers or private details of your case into the guide.
For new clients and attorneys whose accounts are created after these AI defaults were introduced, the AI brief, support assistant and AI guide are enabled when you first accept both current documents and press Continue; there is no separate AI approval step. Processing starts only after acceptance is saved, and Guide questions are sent only when you ask one. Your choice for each AI feature is saved separately; granting brief or support permission alone does not enable the Guide. Initial defaults apply only when you qualify for the new-account acceptance flow and have no earlier decision for that feature. Explicit choices and existing permission history, including an older permission, a choice to keep a feature off or a withdrawal, are preserved. Later acceptance of updated documents does not automatically re-enable a feature. Other accounts keep their existing choices and can manage AI permissions in Settings.
AI features work only while you have accepted the current Terms and Privacy Policy. When we publish an updated version, they pause until you accept it. You can switch the AI brief and AI support off in Settings: with the brief off, you write your description yourself, and with AI support off, your support messages go to a person. You can withdraw Guide permission in Settings — Privacy to stop future AI answers and still browse and search the guide topics. Withdrawal stops future processing; it does not recall information already sent. AI answers can be wrong, are not legal advice and are not reviewed by Lawber staff before you see them. AI review of your cases and disputes for Lawber staff requires its own separate permission and is not enabled by accepting these documents. AI is never used to decide payments, refunds, attorney approval or legal questions.
12. Support
- You can contact Lawber Support in the app (Support chat), with the form at lawber.app/support or at [email protected]. In the app, the AI assistant gives an initial answer only when your current permission is enabled; otherwise your messages go to a person. You can ask for a person at any time.
- Requests about an active urgent case are handled first. We do not promise a fixed response time.
13. Using Lawber responsibly
- Use Lawber only for real requests and lawful purposes. Don’t create false requests, impersonate anyone, or harass, threaten or abuse attorneys, clients or staff.
- Pay for requests arranged through Lawber only through Lawber.
- Don’t interfere with the app or other users’ accounts, or try to access data you are not allowed to see.
- We may limit, suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms, puts other people at risk or is used for fraud. Where possible, we tell you why. Open requests and payments are then handled as described in these Terms.
14. Your content and ours
- You keep your rights in the text, files and messages you add. You allow us to store, process and show them within the access allowed for the service, and to use service providers as described in the Privacy Policy. The attorney receives the information shared for the request. Staff access to confidential request conversations requires the separate client permission described in section 9; asking for support or opening a dispute does not itself grant that access.
- The Lawber app, website and brand belong to us. You may use them only to use Lawber.
15. Our responsibility
- We operate the platform, process payments according to these Terms and review problems and disputes in good faith.
- The legal work and advice are the responsibility of the attorney who provides them.
- The app depends on your device, networks and third-party services (such as payment, maps, messaging and calling providers). We work to keep Lawber available but can’t promise it will always work without interruption.
- Nothing in these Terms limits any rights you have under law that can’t be limited by agreement.
16. Changes to these Terms
- We may update these Terms. Each version is identified at the top of this page. When we publish a new version, the app asks you to accept it before you place or accept new requests, and AI features pause until you do.
- A request is governed by the version in effect when it was placed. Its agreed price and terms are not changed by a later version.
